A Kind and Gentle Winter Comes To Red Rock Canyon
Las Vegas enjoys a short but dramatic winter beginning at Thanksgiving in late November and gone by late February – if not sooner. The city itself seldom wakes to a light skiff of white on streets and buildings, but magnificent Red Rock Canyon on the west of the valley is high enough in elevation to capture a lot of the white stuff perhaps 5-8 times a winter. One thing we residents have learned – get out there quick if you want to photograph red sandstone capped in white. These snowfalls may melt within a few days but for a short time, you can hike in a Winter Wonderland. You just will never have to shovel the stuff when you return to your cozy home. Now that is a kind and friendly form of winter!
